Epic Blanket
This woven blanket project took forever. I also learned a lot about what it takes to weave with a really long warp and ways to seam two panels together to make a larger blanket. It was originally going to be a tutorial—it will still be part of a future tutorial—but I hadn’t realised that some of my skills were lacking and I wasn’t confident I could create a tutorial from this project. That happens!
Sometimes when I have an idea for a tutorial and I am pretty sure I have the skills to make it, I will pre-emptively film everything and edit it together with either a voice over or a ‘talking head’ video. I began my weaving journey in 2013, and made several projects already, so it seemed like I had the skills for weaving a paneled blanket.
As with many things in fiberarts, I am happily surprised by learning things that I was about to take for granted. There are so, so many skills you can develop that it keeps the craft feeling fresh and invigorating for the mind. While I enjoy the process of gaining new experiences and learning new skills, it does mean that I need to halt progress on a tutorial (or other video). That was the case with this woven blanket project. In fact, I decided to make a second project to practice my skills and knowledge. Now that I’ve finished two projects, I am happier designing a proper tutorial. I’ll post the details via social media, in case anyone would like to follow along.
In my second paneled project, with Blue Texel wool, the join between panels is invisible (center)!
Please watch the Daily Vlog for my gripping (lol) tale of what I learned about managing tension with a long warp and the conundrum I faced when actually stitching the two panels together!
