Let’s just experiment.
Science meets Art.
I’ve been a long believer in combining what I know of science and plying it to art. You don’t need to have some latent artistic ability to create something remarkable or awe-inspiring. A little science goes a long way to help us explore the crafting world through experimentation. It’s good to know what ‘science-y’ things are out there. It’s fun to see how people use it to manifest their artistic expression. You can do it too.
If you ever get the chance to chat with an introvert, you’ll quickly learn that they’re fascinating conversationalists but they can have difficulty in talking about themselves. Despite my online presence promoting community and teaching opportunities, I’m very much a wallflower. Until you get me talking about fiber arts and crafts.
So, what was my ‘beginning’? Well, Expertly Dyed: Art by Science was conceived of in mid 2010 and I had a ‘soft’ launch in December 2010. This was after I had submitted my master’s dissertation in Museum Studies (MSc). This opened a new door for me: using my scientific background to approach the art world.
Well, that was my professional ‘beginning’. I’m fairly certain that fiber arts and crafts have been in my visual purview since birth. My mom was an avid seamstress and worked on various needlecrafts throughout my youth. My grandmother was an embroiderer and her mother was a crocheter. My first fabric was hessian and my first tool was a plastic tapestry needle. Of course, since those early days I have circulated through all the fiber and needle arts from embroidery, cross-stitch, crochet, knitting, weaving, spinning, felting, and dyeing.
I would argue that there is no ‘beginning’ to most things, just a point that we may pick arbitrarily to call ‘the start’. And in the crafting world, there is only becoming.
What’s your science?
Do you have an idea that you’d like for me to try out? Do you want to request a video or blog post? Do you want some advice on an experiment or a project? Do you want to be part of a collaboration? There is no limit on creativity. I can also do consultations.
